When the Kingdom of Hungary took in this country, Orava was not a county of villages and lords at all. It was part of an enormous royal forest domain administered from the castle at Zvolen — woods, game, and a thinly guarded frontier facing north. The king owned it, and settlers moved up the valley slowly and on his terms, clearing as they went. What made the crown care about a cold, empty valley was the road: the Orava is a natural corridor from the Váh basin over the passes towards Poland, and salt, cloth and cattle moved along it.
