People were living around this confluence long before anybody wrote the name down: a Bronze Age sword of the Liptov type, pottery on the hill called Hradište and a burial ground all point to fairly dense settlement. At the turn of the era the hill was held by people of the Púchov culture, and finds from the tenth and eleventh centuries show the site still in use. The name itself is the oldest document here — it comes from the old Slavic word for a spring or a source, which is exactly what this ground has where the Turiec runs down to meet the Váh. A settlement stood here, in other words, because of water, long before it mattered because of rails.Ľudia žili okolo tohto sútoku dávno predtým, než niekto zapísal jeho meno: meč liptovského typu z doby bronzovej, keramika na vrchu Hradište i pohrebisko svedčia o pomerne hustom osídlení. Na prelome letopočtu sídlil na Hradišti ľud púchovskej kultúry a nálezy z 10. a 11. storočia ukazujú, že sa miesto využívalo aj naďalej. Najstarším dokumentom je tu samo meno — vzniklo zo starého slovanského slova pre prameň, žriedlo, a presne to sa tu nachádza tam, kde Turiec schádza k Váhu. Osada tu teda stála pre vodu dávno predtým, než začala byť dôležitá pre koľaje.
