On 13 September 1944 the American Fifteenth Air Force sent 401 bombers against oil refineries in what is now southern Poland. Fog covered the Blechhammer-South refinery, so seven B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 2nd Bombardment Group turned on a target of opportunity: the marshalling yard at Vrútky. At 11:52 they dropped fifty-five 250-kilogram bombs on it, wrecking about fifty wagons, cutting the track and hitting buildings north and south of the yard. Insurgent officers claimed afterwards that they had radioed the yard's coordinates to Kyiv and asked for the raid; it is more likely the aircraft simply needed somewhere to unload, and historians still argue about it — which is a useful thing to know about how war stories are made.13. septembra 1944 vyslala americká 15. letecká armáda 401 bombardérov proti ropným rafinériám na juhu dnešného Poľska.
