A revolutionary national committee was formed in Vrútky on 25 August 1944, four days before the Slovak National Uprising began. Serious fighting between German units and the insurgent army started in the Strečno gorge on 31 August, and on 5 September the German Tatra Division fought its way into Vrútky and took the town. The insurgents then stabilised the front, and for about fifteen days there was hard fighting for Vrútky and neighbouring Priekopa — a junction is worth that much to both sides. The insurgent forces withdrew from the Turiec on 21 September 1944, and the town stayed in German hands through the winter that followed.Revolučný národný výbor vznikol vo Vrútkach 25. augusta 1944, štyri dni pred vypuknutím Slovenského národného povstania. Vážne boje medzi nemeckými jednotkami a povstaleckou armádou sa začali 31. augusta v Strečnianskej tiesňave a 5. septembra sa nemecká divízia Tatra prebila do Vrútok a obsadila ich. Povstalci potom front stabilizovali a asi pätnásť dní sa tvrdo bojovalo o Vrútky a susednú Priekopu — taký uzol za to obom stranám stál. Povstalecké sily opustili Turiec 21. septembra 1944 a mesto zostalo v nemeckých rukách celú nasledujúcu zimu.
