The occupiers were driven out of Vrútky on 11 April 1945 by the 1st and 3rd brigades of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps — soldiers who had spent the war in the Soviet Union and had fought their way home through the Dukla pass. Martin was taken the same morning. The junction had been bombed by one ally and fought over by both sides for seven months, and putting the tracks back into service was the first task of the peace.
