History of VrútkyDejiny — Vrútky

Vrútky is what a railway makes when it arrives in a village. In 1869 there were 915 people here; thirty years later there were 4,345, and the difference is a junction, an engine shed and a workshop. Almost everything that happens to the town afterwards — the languages spoken in it, the bombs dropped on it, the two periods when it was swallowed by Martin — follows from the tracks.

  1. prehistory to the 11th centurypravek až 11. storočie The place named after its springsMiesto pomenované podľa žriediel

People were living around this confluence long before anybody wrote the name down: a Bronze Age sword of the Liptov type, pottery on the hill called Hradište and a burial ground all point to fairly dense settlement. At the turn of the era the hill was held by people of the Púchov culture, and finds from the tenth and eleventh centuries show the site still in use. The name itself is the oldest document here — it comes from the old Slavic word for a spring or a source, which is exactly what this ground has where the Turiec runs down to meet the Váh. A settlement stood here, in other words, because of water, long before it mattered because of rails.Ľudia žili okolo tohto sútoku dávno predtým, než niekto zapísal jeho meno: meč liptovského typu z doby bronzovej, keramika na vrchu Hradište i pohrebisko svedčia o pomerne hustom osídlení.

  2. after 1241po roku 1241 Rewarded after the MongolsOdmena po Mongoloch

Vrútky's oldest story belongs to the years right after the Mongol invasion. The oldest accounts say King Béla IV stayed at Zniev castle in the Turiec once the Mongols had gone, that men from Vrútky had distinguished themselves in the castle's defence, and that he gave them estates and raised them into the zeman class — petty nobles — on condition that they maintained armed men for the defence of the region. Notice what this is not: nobody claims Vrútky was destroyed in 1241, and there is no castle here to be destroyed. What the invasion produced in this valley was a class of small noble families, and their descendants are still countable much later — fifteen noble families and four manor houses in the village at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Vpád tu vytvoril vrstvu drobných zemianskych rodín a ich potomkov možno spočítať ešte oveľa neskôr — začiatkom 19. storočia bolo v obci pätnásť zemianskych rodov a štyri kúrie.

The first written mention of the settlement is dated 19 August 1255, when villa Vrutk appears as part of the Záturčie estates. A Gothic church of St John the Baptist was standing here by 1285, and an independent parish is documented in 1332, which together tell you this was a proper village and not a hamlet. By the end of the thirteenth century it had divided into Lower and Upper Vrútky, a split confirmed by a charter of the Turiec convent in 1329 and still visible in the street plan. In 1271 a document names one comes Martin, who was granted forest and the right to mine between Modly, Priekopa and Vrútky — a reminder that the valley floor was worth arguing over long before industry arrived.

  4. 1560, 1622 and 16341560, 1622 a 1634 The village turns LutheranDedina sa stáva evanjelickou

The Reformation reached the Turiec during the sixteenth century, and by 1560 the church at Vrútky was Lutheran like most of the basin. Its tower was repaired in 1622 and again in 1634, which is the ordinary evidence of a parish that was working and had money for scaffolding. There was no Ottoman front here and no fortress: the wars of the century reached this valley as taxes, requisitions and passing soldiers. A Lutheran school ran beside the church, and the schooling of this village has an unbroken line from it into the nineteenth century.

By 1709 the church belonged to the Catholics again — the counter-reformation reached the Turiec as it reached everywhere, through the landlords and the crown rather than through argument. A Catholic school took over from the old Lutheran one and taught in a wooden building from 1779. The village was still tiny: about three hundred people in 1806, of whom fifteen families were gentry with four manor houses between them, while eighty-three non-noble families lived in some seventy houses. Hold that number in your head for the next stop, because it is about to be multiplied by fourteen in one lifetime.V roku 1709 patril kostol už opäť katolíkom — rekatolizácia prišla do Turca tak ako všade inde, cez zemepánov a panovníka, nie cez presviedčanie. Obec bola stále maličká: okolo roku 1806 mala asi tristo obyvateľov, z toho pätnásť zemianskych rodov so štyrmi kúriami a osemdesiattri nešľachtických rodín v zhruba sedemdesiatich domoch.

Standing where two rivers meet is dangerous as well as useful. The chronicles record dozens of floods and one catastrophe above the others: on 25 and 26 August 1813 the Váh changed its bed and cut the village's fields in two. In 1831 a cholera epidemic killed about forty people here, and large fires destroyed property in 1843 and again in 1845. This is the ordinary nineteenth century of a poor Slovak village, and it is worth reading before the railway arrives, so that what the railway did is properly visible.Bývať tam, kde sa stretávajú dve rieky, je aj výhodné, aj nebezpečné. Kroniky zaznamenali desiatky povodní a jednu katastrofu nad všetkými: 25. a 26. augusta 1813 zmenil Váh svoje koryto a rozdelil vrútocký chotár na dvoje. V roku 1831 si tu epidémia cholery vyžiadala asi štyridsať obetí a v rokoch 1843 a 1845 zničili majetky rozsiahle požiare. Toto je obyčajné 19. storočie chudobnej slovenskej dediny a treba si ho prečítať skôr než príde železnica, aby bolo poriadne vidno, čo železnica urobila.

The Košice–Bohumín railway, built across the north of the kingdom to link the Silesian coalfields with the east, reached Vrútky in 1870, and in 1872 the Hungarian state railway's line up from Salgótarján — through Zvolen, Kremnica and Turčianske Teplice — was connected to it here. A junction of two trunk routes needs water, sidings, an engine shed and workshops, and those were built in 1873. The population tells the rest: 915 people in 1869, 1,944 in 1880, 4,345 in 1900. With them came a stone quarry at Dubná Skala in 1877, a railwaymen's consumer co-operative in 1881, a workshop apprentice school in 1888, a volunteer fire brigade, a steam sawmill, two doctors, two pharmacies, four hotels and a cinema screen in the Hotel Urania.Košicko-bohumínska železnica, stavaná naprieč severom kráľovstva, aby spojila sliezske uhoľné revíry s východom, dorazila do Vrútok v roku 1870 a v roku 1872 sa tu na ňu napojila trať uhorských štátnych železníc zo Šalgótarjánu — cez Zvolen, Kremnicu a Turčianske Teplice. Uzol dvoch hlavných tratí potrebuje vodu, odstavné koľaje, výhrevňu a dielne, a tie tu postavili v roku 1873. Zvyšok povedia čísla obyvateľov: 915 v roku 1869, 1 944 v roku 1880 a 4 345 v roku 1900. S nimi pribudol kameňolom Dubná Skala v roku 1877, potravné družstvo zamestnancov železnice v roku 1881, dielenská učňovská škola v roku 1888, dobrovoľný hasičský spolok, parná píla, dvaja lekári, dve lekárne, štyri hotely a filmové plátno v hoteli Urania.

  8. the census of 1910sčítanie z roku 1910 Ruttka: a company town of several languagesRuttka: firemné mesto viacerých jazykov

Under its Hungarian name, Ruttka, the town was one of the busier junctions of the northern network, and a state railway job meant a state language. The census of 1910 counted 6,262 inhabitants: 3,213 gave Slovak as their mother tongue, 2,164 Hungarian and 770 German. Read those figures carefully — a Hungarian census asked for mother tongue at a time when Hungarian was the language of promotion, of the school and of the office, so the numbers measure pressure as well as speech. The proof is what happened next: in the census of 1921, in the same town, only 359 people gave Hungarian.

  9. December 1918 and the 1920sdecember 1918 a dvadsiate roky Czechoslovak railwaymen move inPrichádzajú československí železničiari

In December 1918 Czechoslovak troops occupied the town and Czech railway employees took over the running of the depot and the administration; the former Hungarian state line passed to the Czechoslovak command, while the private Košice–Bohumín company was directed from Košice. There were not enough flats for the staff, so in 1921 the railway employees founded a building and housing co-operative, and with it came the Workers' House, the Sokol hall, a municipal building and a fire station. The banks of both rivers were regulated during the same building boom, which finally reduced the flooding. After 1930 a battery factory and a Catholic cultural house were added, the Catholic church was completely rebuilt and the Lutherans, who had built a new church in the years around 1900, added a cultural house in 1943.V decembri 1918 obsadilo mesto československé vojsko a správu depa i železnice prevzali českí železniční zamestnanci; bývalá uhorská štátna trať prešla pod slovenské veliteľstvo ČSD, súkromnú košicko-bohumínsku dráhu riadilo riaditeľstvo v Košiciach.

A revolutionary national committee was formed in Vrútky on 25 August 1944, four days before the Slovak National Uprising began. Serious fighting between German units and the insurgent army started in the Strečno gorge on 31 August, and on 5 September the German Tatra Division fought its way into Vrútky and took the town. The insurgents then stabilised the front, and for about fifteen days there was hard fighting for Vrútky and neighbouring Priekopa — a junction is worth that much to both sides. The insurgent forces withdrew from the Turiec on 21 September 1944, and the town stayed in German hands through the winter that followed.Revolučný národný výbor vznikol vo Vrútkach 25. augusta 1944, štyri dni pred vypuknutím Slovenského národného povstania. Vážne boje medzi nemeckými jednotkami a povstaleckou armádou sa začali 31. augusta v Strečnianskej tiesňave a 5. septembra sa nemecká divízia Tatra prebila do Vrútok a obsadila ich. Povstalci potom front stabilizovali a asi pätnásť dní sa tvrdo bojovalo o Vrútky a susednú Priekopu — taký uzol za to obom stranám stál. Povstalecké sily opustili Turiec 21. septembra 1944 a mesto zostalo v nemeckých rukách celú nasledujúcu zimu.

On 13 September 1944 the American Fifteenth Air Force sent 401 bombers against oil refineries in what is now southern Poland. Fog covered the Blechhammer-South refinery, so seven B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 2nd Bombardment Group turned on a target of opportunity: the marshalling yard at Vrútky. At 11:52 they dropped fifty-five 250-kilogram bombs on it, wrecking about fifty wagons, cutting the track and hitting buildings north and south of the yard. Insurgent officers claimed afterwards that they had radioed the yard's coordinates to Kyiv and asked for the raid; it is more likely the aircraft simply needed somewhere to unload, and historians still argue about it — which is a useful thing to know about how war stories are made.13. septembra 1944 vyslala americká 15. letecká armáda 401 bombardérov proti ropným rafinériám na juhu dnešného Poľska.

The occupiers were driven out of Vrútky on 11 April 1945 by the 1st and 3rd brigades of the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps — soldiers who had spent the war in the Soviet Union and had fought their way home through the Dukla pass. Martin was taken the same morning. The junction had been bombed by one ally and fought over by both sides for seven months, and putting the tracks back into service was the first task of the peace. The rebuilding of the depot and the workshops is the reason the trade survived at all.Okupantov vyhnali z Vrútok 11. apríla 1945 1. a 3. brigáda 1. československého armádneho zboru — vojaci, ktorí prežili vojnu v Sovietskom zväze a domov sa prebíjali cez Dukliansky priesmyk. Martin oslobodili v to isté ráno. Uzol bombardoval jeden spojenec a obe strany oň sedem mesiacov bojovali, a tak bolo prvou úlohou mieru vrátiť koľaje do prevádzky. Práve obnova depa a dielní je dôvod, prečo tunajšie remeslo vôbec prežilo.

Under communism the railway works were nationalised and went on doing what they had always done, moving from steam locomotives to diesel and electric traction as the network changed. Schools multiplied, including a grammar school and a school of art. Administratively the town twice stopped existing: from 1949 to 1954, and again from 1971, Vrútky was part of Martin under the official name Martin-Vrútky. That is why older maps and documents can show the same streets under two different towns, and why the two places share buses, schools and a labour market to this day. Pribúdali školy vrátane gymnázia a základnej umeleckej školy. Administratívne mesto dvakrát prestalo existovať: v rokoch 1949 – 1954 a znovu od roku 1971 boli Vrútky súčasťou Martina pod úradným názvom Martin-Vrútky. Preto môžu staršie mapy a dokumenty uvádzať tie isté ulice pod dvoma rôznymi mestami a preto majú obe mestá dodnes spoločné autobusy, školy aj pracovný trh.

  14. 19901990 A town againOpäť mestom

In 1990 Vrútky separated from Martin again and was granted the status of a town in its own right. It got back its own council, its own budget and its own name on the signposts. The railway trade, meanwhile, went through the same shock as the rest of the country: fewer freight trains, fewer state orders, and a workshop that had to find customers rather than receive plans. That it survived at all is unusual — most Slovak towns of this size lost the industry they were founded on.V roku 1990 sa Vrútky od Martina znovu odčlenili a získali štatút mesta.

  15. since 1993od roku 1993 Still a railway townStále železničiarske mesto

Vrútky is one of the few Slovak towns whose founding industry is still its main one. The repair works overhaul rail vehicles and descend directly from the locomotive shops of 1873; the depot, the operating staff and the permanent-way crews add to that, and most other working residents commute the few kilometres into Martin. The town is not a monument town and does not pretend to be: what it has is a coherent piece of railway urbanism — the station, the yards, and behind them the grid of railwaymen's houses. It is a good place to see how a nineteenth-century industry actually built somewhere to live.Vrútky patria medzi tých pár slovenských miest, kde je odvetvie, ktoré ich založilo, dodnes tým hlavným. Opravovne robia generálne opravy koľajových vozidiel a sú priamym pokračovaním rušňových dielní z roku 1873; k tomu treba prirátať depo, prevádzkových zamestnancov a traťové čaty, kým väčšina ostatných pracujúcich dochádza tých pár kilometrov do Martina.
