Under its Hungarian name, Ruttka, the town was one of the busier junctions of the northern network, and a state railway job meant a state language. The census of 1910 counted 6,262 inhabitants: 3,213 gave Slovak as their mother tongue, 2,164 Hungarian and 770 German. Read those figures carefully — a Hungarian census asked for mother tongue at a time when Hungarian was the language of promotion, of the school and of the office, so the numbers measure pressure as well as speech. The proof is what happened next: in the census of 1921, in the same town, only 359 people gave Hungarian.Pod maďarským menom Ruttka patrilo mesto k rušnejším uzlom severnej siete a miesto na štátnej železnici znamenalo aj štátny jazyk. Sčítanie z roku 1910 tu napočítalo 6 262 obyvateľov: 3 213 uviedlo ako materinský jazyk slovenčinu, 2 164 maďarčinu a 770 nemčinu. Tie čísla treba čítať opatrne — uhorské sčítanie sa pýtalo na materinský jazyk v čase, keď maďarčina bola jazykom postupu, školy aj úradu, takže merajú aj tlak, nielen reč. Dôkaz priniesol ďalší sčítací hárok: v roku 1921 uviedlo v tom istom meste maďarčinu už len 359 ľudí.
