In 1736 Jozef Czobor, the last of his family to hold the estate, sold Holíč and Šaštín to Francis Stephen of Lorraine. Francis Stephen married the Habsburg heiress Maria Theresa that same year and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1745, so a provincial frontier post became imperial private property almost overnight. Between roughly 1749 and 1754 the architects Jean Nicolas Jadot and Franz Anton Hillebrandt rebuilt the fortress into a three-winged baroque and rococo residence — new wings, state rooms, a chapel, gardens — without demolishing the bastions underneath it. For a generation the imperial family came here to hunt on the plain and to be a day's journey from Vienna.
