The Kingdom of Hungary reached this river and stopped, and it guarded its edge with royal castles and customs posts. Holíč is first mentioned in writing in 1205 under the name Wywar — Hungarian for 'new castle' — which tells you what stood here: a fortified point, at that date almost certainly earth and timber, watching the crossing. In 1228 King Andrew II set up a border customs station here, so goods coming out of Moravia were taxed at Holíč. The castle became the seat of a border county, run for the king by an appointed count. A town grows where travellers have to stop, and here they had to stop and pay.Uhorské kráľovstvo dosiahlo túto rieku a zastalo; svoj okraj strážilo kráľovskými hradmi a mýtnicami.
