In 1773 the pope dissolved the Jesuit order across Europe, and the university lost the men who had run it for nearly a century and a half. Four years later, in 1777, Maria Theresa ordered the whole university moved to Buda, closer to the centre of her kingdom. It never came back. A town of perhaps a few thousand people lost its students, its professors, its press orders and the trade that fed on all of them in a single administrative decision — and today's Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest still dates its founding to 1635 in a Slovak town. If you want a lesson in how a place can be unmade without a war, this is it.V roku 1773 pápež zrušil jezuitskú rehoľu v celej Európe a univerzita prišla o ľudí, ktorí ju takmer poldruha storočia viedli. O štyri roky neskôr, v roku 1777, dala Mária Terézia celú univerzitu presťahovať do Budína, bližšie k stredu kráľovstva.
