In 1238 King Béla IV granted Trnava the privileges of a free royal town — its own judge and council, its own market and tolls, and a lord who was the king himself and nobody nearer. It was the first town on the territory of today's Slovakia to get them, and note the date: this is three years before the Mongol armies arrived, so the privileges are not a reward for surviving them. What the invasion of 1241–42 changed was the walls. Afterwards the king brought German settlers in to refill and rebuild the towns, and Trnava — with no hill and no rock — spent the next century enclosing itself in brick instead: a circuit of roughly three kilometres around some 56 hectares, one of the oldest brick fortification systems in Slovakia, of which about two thirds still stands. You can walk up onto it today in Park Bella IV., a small walled park named after the king who signed the charter.V roku 1238 udelil kráľ Belo IV. Vpád rokov 1241 – 1242 zmenil niečo iné — hradby. Kráľ po ňom pozval do vyľudnených miest nemeckých osadníkov a Trnava, ktorá nemá kopec ani skalu, sa nasledujúce storočie obopínala tehlou: okruh dlhý zhruba tri kilometre okolo asi 56 hektárov, jedno z najstarších tehlových opevnení na Slovensku, z ktorého dodnes stoja asi dve tretiny.
