Ilava got its district back in 1996 and light industry began arriving from 2003, but it never became the regional centre its position on the map suggests. The prison is still there and is one of the town's larger employers, which is an odd thing to be able to say about a district seat; most people work up and down the valley instead — at the engineering plants of Dubnica nad Váhom, the cement works at Ladce, the tyre plant at Púchov. The historic core is a working prison and cannot be visited. What a passer-by gets is the outside: long whitewashed walls with a church tower rising over them, in the middle of a small town.Okres dostala Ilava späť v roku 1996 a od roku 2003 sem začal prichádzať ľahký priemysel, regionálnym centrom, aké by zodpovedalo jej polohe na mape, sa však nestala. Väznica tu stále je a patrí k väčším zamestnávateľom mesta, čo sa o okresnom sídle hovorí nezvyčajne; väčšina ľudí pracuje po doline – v strojárňach v Dubnici nad Váhom, v cementárni v Ladcoch, v pneumatikárni v Púchove. Historické jadro je fungujúca väznica a navštíviť sa nedá. Okoloidúci uvidí vonkajšok: dlhé obielené múry a nad nimi kostolnú vežu, uprostred malého mesta.
