IlavaIlava

Enough went wrong at Ilava that the regime investigated its own camp. In December 1948 a commission found the commandant and two others taking bribes, abusing their powers, letting inmates escape, sexually abusing women inmates and beating people; all three were arrested. A later commandant, Mikuláš Jakab, was reported for arbitrary punishments, threats to kill and repeated violence, confirmed by several witnesses. He was charged in October 1949 — and in September 1951 the prosecution was dropped on the ground that he had acted out of „excessive zeal“ and devotion to the regime. That one sentence tells you what the rules actually were.V Ilave sa pokazilo toľko vecí, že režim vyšetroval vlastný tábor. V decembri 1948 zistila komisia, že správca tábora a dvaja ďalší berú úplatky, zneužívajú právomoci, umožňujú útek zaradencov, sexuálne zneužívajú zaradenkyne a bijú ľudí; všetkých troch zadržali. Na neskoršieho veliteľa Mikuláša Jakaba prišli hlásenia o svojvoľných trestoch, vyhrážkach smrťou a opakovanom násilí, ktoré potvrdili viacerí svedkovia. V októbri 1949 naňho podali trestné oznámenie – a v septembri 1951 stíhanie zastavili s odôvodnením, že konal z „prílišnej horlivosti“ a oddanosti režimu. Tá jediná veta hovorí, aké pravidlá tam naozaj platili.
