In the 1780s Joseph II dissolved the contemplative orders across his empire, on the argument that a monastery which ran no school and no hospital was of no use to the state. The Trinitarians went, and their buildings began a second life that has never really ended: barracks first, then a manufactory — a cloth factory in the modern sense was operating in Ilava by the end of the eighteenth century. The church stayed, and its tower still rises over the walls. Everything that has happened in Ilava since is happening inside a building the monks left behind.V osemdesiatych rokoch 18. storočia zrušil Jozef II. v celej ríši kontemplatívne rehole s odôvodnením, že kláštor, ktorý neučí a neošetruje, nie je štátu na nič. Trinitári odišli a ich budovy začali druhý život, ktorý sa vlastne dodnes neskončil: najprv kasárne, potom manufaktúra – koncom 18. storočia už v Ilave fungovala súkennícka továreň v modernom zmysle slova. Kostol zostal a jeho veža sa dodnes týči nad múrmi. Všetko, čo sa v Ilave odvtedy deje, deje sa vnútri budovy, ktorú tu nechali mnísi.
