The Second World WarDruhá svetová vojna
IlavaIlava
The Slovak National Uprising began at the end of August 1944, and on the morning of 1 September, at about half past nine, roughly fifty prisoners in Ilava gathered together and, led by Jozef Štaudinger, forced their way out of the camp and up into the hills above the town. The official report called it a mutiny and an escape. In fact the district gendarmerie commander had agreed to it, and the escape was staged to cover him: the next day a busload of armed gendarmes set off supposedly to hunt the fugitives down, and joined the insurgent gendarmerie instead. Several of the men who walked out fought in the Uprising, and the Germans reopened the camp within days of arriving in Slovakia.Slovenské národné povstanie sa začalo koncom augusta 1944 a ráno 1. septembra, asi o pol desiatej, sa v Ilave zhromaždilo približne päťdesiat väzňov a pod vedením Jozefa Štaudingera si vynútili odchod z tábora a odišli do hôr nad mestom. Úradné hlásenie hovorilo o vzbure a úteku.
