Ilava's own historians admit they cannot prove the town existed in the thirteenth century, because no document says so. What they point out instead is that every village around it demonstrably did exist by then — Pruské, Košeca, Dubnica, Klobušice — and that at Ilava there was an old ford across the Váh, the only usable crossing on this stretch of the river. It is very unlikely that the one place worth guarding was the one place nobody lived. That is how historians reason when the documents run out, and it is worth watching them do it rather than being handed a date.Ilavskí historici sami priznávajú, že existenciu mesta v 13. storočí dokázať nevedia, lebo o nej nehovorí žiadna listina.
