TrenčínTrenčín

The same decades did one thing for Trenčín that is hard to argue with: they started rebuilding the castle. From the end of the 1950s a complete restoration got under way, wing by wing, on a complex that had been a burnt shell since 1790, and in 1961 the castle was declared a national cultural monument. The work has never really stopped — it is still going on, which is why a visitor today can climb the Matúš Tower and walk through roofed palace rooms instead of picking over rubble. Restoration on this scale is slow, expensive and never quite finished. That is normal, not a failure.
