Trenčín was never an Ottoman town — the frontier ran far to the south. But in September 1663 the great fortress of Nové Zámky surrendered, the defensive line came apart, and raiding parties pushed up the Váh valley. On 2 October 1663 the townspeople beat off the biggest Turkish raid ever to reach Trenčín. Remember that the next time you hear that some ruin in the northern hills was 'destroyed by the Turks': in this part of the country the Ottomans were a raid, not an occupation, and most of the wrecking was done later, by other people.Trenčín nikdy nebol tureckým mestom — hranica viedla ďaleko na juhu.
