TrenčínTrenčín

The war was followed by the plague. The epidemic of 1710 killed 1,600 people in Trenčín — a catastrophic number for a town of this size, and it emptied streets that the fighting had already emptied once. In 1712 the survivors raised a plague column on the main square, and it still stands in the middle of Mierové námestie among the café tables. Baroque plague columns stand in market squares all over central Europe for the same reason: they are not decoration, they are a town's gravestone for its own dead.
