When the kingdom of Hungary divided the country into counties, Trenčín got one of them, and the castle on the rock became its seat — the place where the king's župan, the county count, held court, collected dues and kept order. The name of the town appears in writing for the first time in the two Zobor charters of 1111 and 1113, the oldest documents preserved in Slovakia, in the forms Treinchen and Trenciniensis. Be careful with a date like that: it tells you when a monk wrote the name down, not when people arrived. The settlement under the rock was already old by then, living off the road and the river crossing.Keď sa Uhorské kráľovstvo rozdelilo na stolice, Trenčín dostal jednu z nich a hrad na brale sa stal jej sídlom — miestom, kde kráľovský župan súdil, vyberal dávky a dbal na poriadok. Meno mesta sa po prvý raz objavuje v písomnostiach v dvoch zoborských listinách z rokov 1111 a 1113, najstarších dokumentoch zachovaných na Slovensku, v tvaroch Treinchen a Trenciniensis. S takýmto dátumom treba narábať opatrne: hovorí o tom, kedy meno zapísal mních, nie o tom, odkedy tu ľudia žijú. Osada pod bralom bola vtedy už dávno stará a živila sa cestou a brodom cez Váh.
