After the Ottomans destroyed the Hungarian army at Mohács in 1526, two men were crowned king of the same kingdom: Ferdinand of Habsburg and John Zápoľský. Trenčín belonged to the Zápoľský family, so it was on the losing side. Ferdinand's general Katzianer took the castle and the town by force — sources give the year as 1527 or 1528 and do not agree with each other. The Zápoľský palace in the upper courtyard keeps the family's name anyway, which is how castles usually remember their owners: by the rooms they built, not by the way they lost the place.Keď Osmani v roku 1526 pri Moháči zničili uhorské vojsko, dali sa korunovať za kráľa toho istého kráľovstva hneď dvaja muži: Ferdinand Habsburský a Ján Zápoľský.
