The Slovak National Uprising began on 29 August 1944, but in Spiš the German side had the advantage from the first day: around 1,500 Spiš Germans were gathered at Kežmarok on 29 and 30 August, armed and formed into Heimatschutz units, and the insurgent attempt to take the town failed. In September the Germans killed twenty-two people in Kežmarok. When the Uprising was crushed in October the fighting did not end; it moved into the forests, and the mountain villages north of the Tatras were where those men came down for food. The front reached the Dunajec in the last week of January 1945 — the Red Army pushed the Wehrmacht out of Červený Kláštor on 26 January 1945.Slovenské národné povstanie sa začalo 29. augusta 1944, no na Spiši mala nemecká strana prevahu od prvého dňa: 29. a 30. augusta sústredili v Kežmarku okolo 1 500 spišských Nemcov, vyzbrojili ich a sformovali do jednotiek Heimatschutzu, a povstalecký pokus mesto obsadiť stroskotal.
