Krásna Hôrka stands on a steep cone of a hill above the village of Krásnohorské Podhradie in Gemer, and for most of its life it did exactly what it was built to do: watch the road that carried ore and money out of the Slovak Ore Mountains. Two families held it for almost all of that time — the Bebeks for over three hundred years, the Andrássys for nearly four hundred more — which is why the castle is not only a fortress but an archive of furniture, weapons and family papers that were never sold off. It came through Jiskra, the Ottoman century and two anti-Habsburg uprisings without ever being stormed. What finally beat it was a grass fire on 10 March 2012, and the castle has been closed or restricted, and under reconstruction, ever since.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the army of the Kingdom of Hungary and rode across the country, and King Béla IV spent months in flight. Slovak accounts say the hill above Krásnohorské Podhradie probably carried an older earth-and-timber fort, a hradisko, and that it sheltered the king during that flight — probably, because the evidence is thin. What is not in doubt is what the king did next: he handed great estates in Gemer to families he trusted, among them the Ákos clan from whom the Bebeks descend, and he pushed his nobles to build in stone on high rock. The castle on this cone belongs to that programme, in the thirteenth century. It is an answer to the invasion, not one of its victims.
Krásna Hôrka appears in writing for the first time in 1333, by which point it was already standing. The first castle here was small and hard: a four-sided tower and a residential palace inside one ring of wall, set to watch the medieval road through the mining country of the Slovak Ore Mountains. Notice what the date actually tells you — it is a fact about a document that happened to survive, not about when the first stone was laid. From this rock the Bebeks ruled the Krásna Hôrka estates for more than three hundred years, and the villages below existed to feed the castle, cart for it and fight for it.Krásna Hôrka sa v písomnostiach objavuje po prvý raz v roku 1333 a vtedy už dávno stála.
After the death of King Albert the kingdom fell into a war over an infant heir, and the Bohemian captain Ján Jiskra held much of what is now Slovakia for the boy king Ladislaus. In 1441 his troops occupied Gemer. This is the moment where local storytelling usually reaches for a ruin, and here that would be wrong: the castle was occupied but not destroyed, and when the garrison marched out it went back to the Bebeks, who kept it until 1566. Castles changed hands far more often than they were reduced to rubble, and remembering that is half of reading a Slovak castle correctly. Hrady menili majiteľov oveľa častejšie, než ich niekto zrovnal so zemou — a kto si to pamätá, číta slovenské hrady o polovicu správnejšie.
After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 the frontier moved north, and a castle built against arrows had to be rebuilt against gunpowder. In 1546 František Bebek ordered new fortifications from the Italian engineer A. de Vedano: a triangular circuit with squat semicircular bastions at the corners — low and thick where the old walls had been tall and thin — and heavy guns cast in 1545 and 1547 that still stand on the terrace today. Those round towers are the shape everyone recognises on the poster. The Bebeks then ruined themselves politically: convinced that the Ottomans had taken Fiľakovo with imperial connivance, František turned on the emperor's troops and raided noble seats nearby, his son Juraj spent five years in Ottoman captivity and was suspected of organising a revolt, and imperial armies seized the family's estates. Juraj died in Transylvania in 1567 and the Bebek line died with him. Juraj zomrel v Sedmohradsku v roku 1567 a rod Bebekovcov s ním vymrel.
A succession of royal captains did the castle no good until the young and ambitious Peter Andrássy took it on a long lease around 1578 and began a rebuilding that ran for a hundred years; in 1642 the family was granted Krásna Hôrka outright by a donation charter. Then came the anti-Habsburg risings, and this is where the usual story about Slovak castles goes wrong. Krásna Hôrka was held for Imrich Thököly in 1678, and in 1685 the imperial general Schulz came to take it back; he could not storm the rock, so he blockaded it for about a year until the garrison surrendered on agreed terms, and kuruc troops of the Rákóczi rising held it again in the next century. Surrendering on terms is precisely why nobody demolished it afterwards. Many Gemer castles were slighted on Habsburg orders after these wars; this one was not, and that is the reason it is still a building rather than a heap of stones.Striedanie kráľovských kapitánov hradu neprospievalo, kým ho okolo roku 1578 nezískal do dlhodobého prenájmu mladý a ctižiadostivý Peter Andráši a nezačal prestavbu, ktorá trvala sto rokov; v roku 1642 dostal rod Krásnu Hôrku donačnou listinou do vlastníctva.
Once the fighting stopped the Andrássys turned a fortress into a home. After 1710 the castle was remodelled at the same time as the manor at Betliar a few kilometres away, which belonged to the same family, and the two buildings are two halves of one arrangement: the stronghold on the rock and the comfortable house on the flat. A hall for the county assembly — the congregation hall, where the nobility of Gemer met to govern themselves — was fitted into the upper castle, and in 1770 a cannon bastion above the entrance was rebuilt as a baroque chapel, which holds the painting of the Krásnohorská Madonna of 1739. A castle being given assembly rooms and an altar is a castle nobody expects to have to defend.
In 1818 Krásna Hôrka burned. The wife of Štefan Andrássy had it patched up as an emergency, their son Juraj carried the work on, and the family never lived in it in the old way again — which left them with a huge building full of four centuries of their own possessions and no household in it. Their answer, in 1857, was to make it their family museum, and after 1875 they let the public in. It was one of the earliest castle museums in this part of Europe, and it was opened by the owners themselves while they still owned the place. That decision is why so much survived the next hundred and fifty years: the collections were arranged, listed and looked after long before anyone had to rescue them.V roku 1818 Krásna Hôrka vyhorela. Patrilo k najstarším hradným múzeám v tejto časti Európy a otvorili ho sami majitelia, kým hrad ešte vlastnili. Práve toto rozhodnutie je dôvod, prečo sa toho toľko zachovalo: zbierky boli usporiadané, spísané a opatrované dávno predtým, než ich bolo treba zachraňovať.
In 1866 Count Dionýz Andrássy married Františka Hablawetzová, the daughter of a Vienna conservatory director and not an aristocrat. His family never accepted her, and in 1867 he was cut out of his branch's entailed estate — the family property that by law had to pass undivided to the next heir — for marrying her. When she died in 1902 he came home and spent his fortune answering them. Inside the castle he fitted out a memorial museum to her in 1903, below it in the village he built her a mausoleum, and he paid for a full restoration of Krásna Hôrka in 1903–1905. It is a rare thing in the history of Slovak monuments: a major restoration driven by private grief and a private grudge.V roku 1866 sa gróf Dionýz Andráši oženil s Františkou Hablawetzovou, dcérou riaditeľa viedenského konzervatória, ktorá nebola šľachtičná. V hrade jej v roku 1903 zriadil pietne múzeum, dole v dedine jej postavil mauzóleum a zaplatil úplnú obnovu Krásnej Hôrky v rokoch 1903 – 1905. V dejinách slovenských pamiatok je to zriedkavosť: veľká obnova poháňaná súkromným žiaľom a súkromnou krivdou.
The First Vienna Award of 2 November 1938 drew a new border through Jelšava, Rožňava and Košice, and Krásnohorské Podhradie with its castle fell on the Hungarian side; Hungarian troops moved in during the first days of November. For the castle the war had only one ending. In 1945 the Andrássys lost everything here, and Krásna Hôrka became state property after roughly three hundred and seventy years in one family. The collections stayed in the building, so the museum carried on under new management — which is the difference between this castle and almost every other aristocratic house in the country.Prvá viedenská arbitráž z 2. novembra 1938 viedla novú hranicu cez Jelšavu, Rožňavu a Košice a Krásnohorské Podhradie aj s hradom pripadlo Maďarsku; maďarské vojsko sem prišlo v prvých novembrových dňoch.
Under the state the castle became one of the best known museum sites in Czechoslovakia. The exhibition ran through three parts of the hill: fortification building from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century and the deep past of eastern Gemer in the oldest core, the Bebek and Andrássy rooms with seventeenth-century furniture and the county assembly hall in the middle castle, the chapel, the family crypt, the castle kitchen with its open hearth and a music salon below. It was placed under national monument protection in the nineteen sixties, though sources give different exact years, and the monuments office carried out the last large repair of the twentieth century. The lesson of these decades is dull and important: a monument survives because somebody is paid to look after it every single year. V šesťdesiatych rokoch ho vyhlásili za národnú kultúrnu pamiatku, hoci pramene uvádzajú rozdielne presné roky, a pamiatkový úrad tu urobil poslednú veľkú opravu dvadsiateho storočia. Poučenie z týchto desaťročí je nudné a dôležité: pamiatka prežije preto, lebo ju má každý jeden rok kto opatrovať.
The castle reopened in April 2011 after a renovation. Eleven months later, on the afternoon of Saturday 10 March 2012, dry grass on the hillside below the walls caught fire at the end of a rainless winter — the cause was traced to careless handling of an open flame by two boys — and the fire ran up the slope into the timber roofs. The shingle roofs burned, the exhibition in the upper Gothic palace burned, the bell tower burned and its bells were destroyed, the ceiling of the congregation hall fell in; firefighters got about ninety per cent of the exhibits out, and the damage was put at eight million euros. A temporary wooden roof went on in December 2012 and the reconstruction has run in phases ever since — emergency covering, then structure, then the long conservation work — with a plan published in 2019 aiming to open the lower and middle castle in 2024 and the upper castle later, because of the scale of the damage and the archaeology underneath. A hillside of March grass took what six centuries of sieges never managed, and the castle is closed or restricted until further notice: check before you travel, and never assume it is normally open.
