After the Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 the frontier moved north, and a castle built against arrows had to be rebuilt against gunpowder. In 1546 František Bebek ordered new fortifications from the Italian engineer A. de Vedano: a triangular circuit with squat semicircular bastions at the corners — low and thick where the old walls had been tall and thin — and heavy guns cast in 1545 and 1547 that still stand on the terrace today. Those round towers are the shape everyone recognises on the poster. The Bebeks then ruined themselves politically: convinced that the Ottomans had taken Fiľakovo with imperial connivance, František turned on the emperor's troops and raided noble seats nearby, his son Juraj spent five years in Ottoman captivity and was suspected of organising a revolt, and imperial armies seized the family's estates. Juraj died in Transylvania in 1567 and the Bebek line died with him.Po osmanskom víťazstve pri Moháči v roku 1526 sa hranica posunula na sever a hrad postavený proti šípom bolo treba prestavať proti pušnému prachu. Bebekovci sa potom politicky zničili sami: keď František usúdil, že Osmani získali Fiľakovo s cisárovým tichým súhlasom, obrátil sa proti cisárskym vojskám a napádal aj šľachtické sídla v okolí, jeho syn Juraj strávil päť rokov v tureckom zajatí a bol podozrivý z organizovania povstania, a cisárske vojská rodové majetky obsadili. Juraj zomrel v Sedmohradsku v roku 1567 a rod Bebekovcov s ním vymrel.
