It began in dry grass on the hillside on a warm, windy afternoon at the end of a rainless winter. The fire ran up the slope into the castle, took hold in the timber roof structures, and within hours the roofs of Krásna Hôrka were burning above the collections of one of the oldest castle museums in the country. Crews fought it through the night from a hilltop with one narrow access lane.Začalo sa to v suchej tráve na svahu, v teplé a veterné popoludnie na konci zimy bez zrážok. Oheň vybehol po svahu do hradu, zachytil sa v drevených konštrukciách krovov a v priebehu niekoľkých hodín horeli strechy Krásnej Hôrky nad zbierkami jedného z najstarších hradných múzeí v krajine. Hasiči s ním bojovali celú noc na kopci s jedinou úzkou prístupovou cestou.
The losses were structural and grievous: the roofs over the main buildings, the bell tower and its bells, and the historic organ. The blaze was traced to two boys playing with fire in the grass below — an ordinary, almost banal cause, and one that made the scale of the damage harder rather than easier to accept. Reconstruction began almost at once and is still going on. It has been phased and slow — emergency roofing first, then structural repair, then the long work of conservation — because there is no fast way to redo a monument of this size properly. Visitor access has followed the works rather than the calendar. That is why every honest description of Krásna Hôrka today ends the same way: find out what is open before you set off.Obnova sa začala takmer okamžite a stále pokračuje. Je etapová a pomalá — najprv provizórne zastrešenie, potom statika a napokon dlhá reštaurátorská práca — pretože pamiatku tejto veľkosti sa poriadne rýchlo obnoviť nedá. Prístup návštevníkov sa riadi postupom prác, nie kalendárom. Preto sa každý poctivý opis Krásnej Hôrky dnes končí rovnako: pred odchodom si zistite, čo je otvorené.
