The castle reopened in April 2011 after a renovation. Eleven months later, on the afternoon of Saturday 10 March 2012, dry grass on the hillside below the walls caught fire at the end of a rainless winter — the cause was traced to careless handling of an open flame by two boys — and the fire ran up the slope into the timber roofs. The shingle roofs burned, the exhibition in the upper Gothic palace burned, the bell tower burned and its bells were destroyed, the ceiling of the congregation hall fell in; firefighters got about ninety per cent of the exhibits out, and the damage was put at eight million euros. A temporary wooden roof went on in December 2012 and the reconstruction has run in phases ever since — emergency covering, then structure, then the long conservation work — with a plan published in 2019 aiming to open the lower and middle castle in 2024 and the upper castle later, because of the scale of the damage and the archaeology underneath. A hillside of March grass took what six centuries of sieges never managed, and the castle is closed or restricted until further notice: check before you travel, and never assume it is normally open.Po obnove hrad v apríli 2011 znova otvorili. O jedenásť mesiacov neskôr, popoludní v sobotu 10. marca 2012, sa na konci bezzrážkovej zimy vznietila suchá tráva na svahu pod múrmi — príčinou bola neopatrná manipulácia s otvoreným ohňom, ktorej sa dopustili dvaja chlapci — a oheň vybehol po svahu do drevených krovov. Zhoreli šindľové strechy, expozícia v hornom gotickom paláci aj zvonica so zvonmi, v kongregačnej sieni sa preboril strop; hasiči zachránili asi deväťdesiat percent exponátov a škody vyčíslili na osem miliónov eur. V decembri 2012 pribudla dočasná drevená strecha a rekonštrukcia odvtedy beží po etapách — najprv núdzové zastrešenie, potom konštrukcie, potom dlhá reštaurátorská práca — pričom plán zverejnený v roku 2019 počítal s otvorením dolného a stredného hradu v roku 2024 a horného až neskôr, pre rozsah škôd a prebiehajúci archeologický výskum. Svah so suchou marcovou trávou vzal to, čo šesť storočí obliehaní nezvládlo, a hrad je až do odvolania zatvorený alebo prístupný len sčasti: over si to pred cestou a nikdy nepredpokladaj, že je bežne otvorený.
