In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the army of the Kingdom of Hungary and rode across the country, and King Béla IV spent months in flight. Slovak accounts say the hill above Krásnohorské Podhradie probably carried an older earth-and-timber fort, a hradisko, and that it sheltered the king during that flight — probably, because the evidence is thin. What is not in doubt is what the king did next: he handed great estates in Gemer to families he trusted, among them the Ákos clan from whom the Bebeks descend, and he pushed his nobles to build in stone on high rock. The castle on this cone belongs to that programme, in the thirteenth century. It is an answer to the invasion, not one of its victims.
