Four Hundred Years in One FamilyŠtyristo rokov v jednej rodine
Krásna Hôrka rises on a steep conical hill above the village of Krásnohorské Podhradie, in the old mining country of Gemer near Rožňava. It was built in the fourteenth century and came early to the Bebek family, the region’s great and frequently troublesome lords, who in the sixteenth century rebuilt it as an artillery fortress: the fat round bastions that give the castle its distinctive profile are theirs, raised against the Ottoman advance from the south.
From the late sixteenth century the castle belonged to the Andrássy family, and it stayed with them for close to four hundred years, until 1945. That is an extraordinary continuity, and it is the reason Krásna Hôrka is not just a fortress but an archive: generations of portraits, weapons, furniture, books and family papers accumulated in the same rooms without ever being dispersed by a sale.
At the beginning of the twentieth century Dionýz Andrássy turned the family seat into a museum — one of the earliest castle museums in this part of Europe, opened while the family still owned it. That decision is why so much survived the wars, the land reforms and the twentieth century in general, and why the collections were catalogued long before the castle needed saving.
