The name of this place appears for the first time in the annals kept at Salzburg, in the entry for the year 907: Brezalauspurc, the castle of a Braslav or a Predslav — historians still argue which man it honours, and a few question whether the entry describes this hill at all. What the annals record is a battle fought near here on 4 July 907, in which the Bavarian army under Margrave Luitpold was destroyed by the Old Magyars. That defeat shut down Frankish expansion eastwards and opened the Danube plain to the Hungarians, whose kingdom would hold this castle for the next thousand years.
