Bratislava CastleBratislavský hrad

From 1552 the Holy Crown of Hungary — the crown every king had to be crowned with — was kept in this castle, and the diet of 1608 confirmed that its place was the south-western tower. That is how the Crown Tower got its name; it is the oldest standing part of the castle and you can climb it. The crown had its own guards: a country that had lost its capital to the Ottomans put the object that made a king in the strongest room it had left. The regalia stayed until 1784 — a few accounts say 1783 — when Emperor Joseph II had them taken to Vienna. Kings were crowned in the cathedral below; the crown itself lived on the hill. Klenoty tu boli až do roku 1784 — niektoré pramene uvádzajú rok 1783 — keď ich dal cisár Jozef II. odviezť do Viedne.
