The seventeenth century was one long argument between the Habsburg kings and the Hungarian nobles who rose against them, and the castle changed hands in it: the Transylvanian prince Gabriel Bethlen held it from 1619 until the peace of 1621. Then the Ottoman danger came closer than ever. After the Turks took Nové Zámky in 1663 the engineer Joseph Priami was brought in to modernise the defences for artillery, and the Leopold Gate went up in 1674 under Leopold I; Priami's grand plan for a star-shaped fortress around the whole hill was never finished. The Ottomans never took this castle — and when you read that some Slovak castle was "destroyed by the Turks", it is worth remembering how often the real cause was a Habsburg demolition order after a rebellion, or simply fire.Sedemnáste storočie bol jeden dlhý spor medzi habsburskými kráľmi a uhorskou šľachtou, ktorá sa proti nim búrila, a hrad v ňom zmenil pána: sedmohradské knieža Gabriel Betlen ho držal od roku 1619 až do mieru v roku 1621. Potom sa priblížilo osmanské nebezpečenstvo. Po tom, čo Turci v roku 1663 dobyli Nové Zámky, prišiel inžinier Joseph Priami a modernizoval opevnenie pre delostrelectvo; v roku 1674 pribudla za Leopolda I. Leopoldova brána. Priamiho veľkolepý plán hviezdicovej pevnosti okolo celého kopca sa nikdy nedokončil. Osmani tento hrad nikdy nedobyli — a keď sa niekde dočítate, že slovenský hrad „zničili Turci“, oplatí sa pamätať, ako často bola skutočnou príčinou habsburská asanácia po povstaní alebo obyčajný požiar.
