In April 1241 the Mongols destroyed the Hungarian army at the river Slaná and rode across the kingdom, burning as they went. Bratislava is one of the few places that held: the castle here was already built of stone, and it withstood the attacks of 1241 and 1242. Most Slovak castles have the opposite story — they do not date from before the invasion at all, but from the years after it, when King Béla IV concluded that earth ramparts and wooden palisades were worthless and pushed his nobles to build in stone on high ground. So when you are told that some castle was "destroyed by the Mongols", ask first whether it existed in 1241.
