On 28 May 1811 the castle burned. The version repeated in Bratislava blames the soldiers quartered in it, and English-language accounts say the same; the contemporary report is stranger, saying the fire broke out in several places at once and that the cause was never established. Nine deaths are recorded, and the flames jumped down the hill: according to the report of the time some seventy-seven buildings below the walls burned with it. The roofs went, the interiors went, the Theresianum went, and the white residence became an empty rectangle of scorched wall on the most conspicuous rock in the city. Zaznamenaných je deväť mŕtvych a plamene preskočili aj dole do podhradia, kde podľa vtedajšej správy zhorelo asi sedemdesiatsedem domov. Strechy boli preč, interiéry tiež, Tereziánum tiež, a z bieleho sídla zostal prázdny obdĺžnik ohorených múrov na najnápadnejšej skale v meste. Tak to zostalo takmer poldruha storočia.
