In the spring of 1953 the architect Alfréd Piffl began surveying the ruin and concluded that the walls were sound enough to rebuild on. That report, together with the campaigning of the painter Janko Alexy, is the reason the castle exists today; demolition was the other option on the table. Building work started in the mid-1950s and the palace was declared finished in 1968, restored to its eighteenth-century Theresian form — which is why most of what you touch up here is twentieth-century work standing on medieval walls. Piffl never saw it finished: in August 1957 he was arrested on a fabricated charge of slandering a friendly power, jailed for two years, stripped of his academic titles, banned from teaching and never allowed back to the site. The constitutional act that created the Czechoslovak federation, giving Slovakia its own government inside the shared state, was passed on 27 October 1968 and signed here — most accounts say on 30 October — in the hall that has been called the Federation Hall ever since.Na jar 1953 začal architekt Alfréd Piffl zameriavať zrúcaninu a dospel k záveru, že murivo je v takom stave, že sa na ňom dá stavať. Vďaka tomuto posudku — a vďaka tomu, ako za záchranu hradu bojoval maliar Janko Alexy — hrad dnes stojí; na stole totiž ležala aj demolácia. Stavať sa začalo v polovici päťdesiatych rokov a palác vyhlásili za dokončený v roku 1968, obnovený do tereziánskej podoby z 18. storočia — preto je väčšina toho, čoho sa tu hore dotknete, prácou dvadsiateho storočia na stredovekých múroch. Piffl to dokončené nevidel: v auguste 1957 ho zatkli na základe vykonštruovaného obvinenia z ohovárania spriatelenej mocnosti, dva roky si odsedel, prišiel o akademické tituly aj o možnosť učiť a na stavbu sa už nikdy nevrátil. Ústavný zákon o československej federácii, ktorý dal Slovensku vlastnú vládu v spoločnom štáte, prijalo Národné zhromaždenie 27. októbra 1968 a podpísali ho tu — podľa väčšiny prameňov 30. októbra — v sále, ktorá sa odvtedy volá Sieň federácie.
