The uprising of 1944 was fought in central Slovakia, around Banská Bystrica; Bratislava was the seat of the regime it rose against, so no barricades went up here. What the city got was the ending. American bombers hit the oil refinery on the Danube in the summer of 1944; on the night of 3 April 1945 the retreating Germans blew up every large bridge over the river; and on the evening of 4 April Soviet troops pushed the German army out of the city. In the middle of the war, in 1942, an international architectural competition had asked what should be done with the ruin on the hill — and most of the entries proposed pulling it down and building something else there. So the castle came out of the war exactly as it had gone in: roofless, and now with demolition plans on file.Povstanie roku 1944 sa bilo na strednom Slovensku, okolo Banskej Bystrice; Bratislava bola sídlom režimu, proti ktorému sa povstalo, takže tu barikády nestáli. Mesto z nej zažilo len jej koniec. V lete 1944 bombardovali americké lietadlá rafinériu na Dunaji, v noci na 4. apríla 1945 vyhodili ustupujúci Nemci do vzduchu všetky veľké dunajské mosty a večer 4. apríla vytlačili sovietske jednotky nemecké vojsko z mesta. A ešte uprostred vojny, v roku 1942, vypísali medzinárodnú architektonickú súťaž na to, čo so zrúcaninou na kopci — väčšina návrhov ju odporúčala zbúrať a postaviť tam niečo iné. Hrad teda vyšiel z vojny presne taký, aký do nej vošiel: bez strechy, a navyše s hotovými plánmi na svoju likvidáciu.
