Sigismund of Luxembourg — king of Hungary and Holy Roman Emperor — had the old castle rebuilt from the 1420s as a huge Gothic fortress, laid out as a regular quadrilateral, with the royal palace begun in 1431. The accounts mention 220 to 240 workers on the site in a single day, which for the fifteenth century is an enormous building project. He did it because of the Hussite wars: Hussite field armies were raiding out of Bohemia and Moravia into what is now Slovakia, and this castle guarded the road to Vienna. Sigismund's Gate, with its Gothic portal, is still the ceremonial way in on the eastern side, and the ground plan he fixed — a block with a courtyard in the middle — was copied by every later rebuilding.Žigmund Luxemburský — uhorský kráľ a rímsky cisár — dal starý hrad od dvadsiatych rokov 15. storočia prestavať na veľkú gotickú pevnosť: pravidelný štvoruholník, kráľovský palác sa začal stavať v roku 1431. Robil to pre husitské vojny: husitské poľné vojská podnikali výpravy z Čiech a Moravy na dnešné Slovensko a tento hrad strážil cestu na Viedeň. Žigmundova brána s gotickým portálom je dodnes reprezentačným vstupom z východnej strany a pôdorys, ktorý vtedy vznikol — blok s nádvorím uprostred — kopírovala každá neskoršia prestavba.
