The Ottoman centuryOsmanské storočie
Bratislava CastleBratislavský hrad
On 29 August 1526 the Ottomans destroyed the Hungarian army at Mohács and the king drowned in flight; within fifteen years Buda was Turkish. What was left of the kingdom — the strip under the Carpathians, roughly today's Slovakia — was run from here: in 1536 the diet made Pressburg, today's Bratislava, the capital of Royal Hungary, and from the coronation of Maximilian II in 1563 the kings were crowned down in St Martin's Cathedral, not up on the hill. The castle became the fortress of a capital city in wartime. That is why, between 1552 and 1562, the Italian architect Pietro Ferrabosco rebuilt it into the shape people now call the upturned table: a squared-off Renaissance block with a tower at each corner.29. augusta 1526 rozdrvili Osmani pri Moháči uhorské vojsko a kráľ sa na úteku utopil; do pätnástich rokov bol Budín turecký. To, čo z kráľovstva zostalo — pás pod Karpatmi, zhruba dnešné Slovensko — riadili odtiaľto: v roku 1536 vyhlásil snem Prešporok, dnešnú Bratislavu, za hlavné mesto Kráľovského Uhorska, a od korunovácie Maximiliána II. v roku 1563 korunovali kráľov dole v Dóme svätého Martina, nie tu hore. Z hradu sa stala pevnosť hlavného mesta vo vojnovom stave. Preto ho v rokoch 1552 – 1562 taliansky architekt Pietro Ferrabosco prestaval do tvaru, ktorému dnes hovoríme prevrátený stôl — zarovnaný renesančný blok s vežou v každom rohu.
