The college became the Technical University in Zvolen in 1991, and the town holds the National Forest Centre, the state's forestry research and advisory body, and the administration of the Poľana Biosphere Reserve. That is an unusual concentration for a town of forty thousand, and it is the modern version of a very old fact: the forests are why anyone built here in the first place. The square was rebuilt in 2002. The railway junction still carries most of central Slovakia's traffic, and Sliač airport between Zvolen and Banská Bystrica has been used only by the military since 2021.V roku 1991 sa z vysokej školy stala Technická univerzita vo Zvolene a v meste sídli aj Národné lesnícke centrum, štátna lesnícka výskumná a poradenská inštitúcia, i správa Biosférickej rezervácie Poľana. Na štyridsaťtisícové mesto je to nezvyčajná koncentrácia — a je to moderná podoba veľmi starej skutočnosti: lesy sú dôvod, prečo tu vôbec niekto začal stavať. Námestie prestavali v roku 2002. Železničný uzol stále vezie väčšinu dopravy stredného Slovenska a letisko Sliač medzi Zvolenom a Banskou Bystricou slúži od roku 2021 už len armáde.
