1440 – 1462 Jiskra, Hunyadi, and a castle that burnedJiskra, Huňady a hrad, ktorý zhorel

For twenty-two years the town lived under Ján Jiskra of Brandýs, the Czech commander who held central and eastern Slovakia for the child-king Ladislaus and used the new castle as one of his seats. The wars between his troops and the army of John Hunyadi decided the fate of the old castle up on the hill: in 1451 it burned during the fighting, and nobody ever rebuilt it. That is how a royal seat became Pustý hrad — the Deserted Castle — and why Zvolen today has two castles, one furnished and one a ruin in the trees.Dvadsaťdva rokov žilo mesto pod Jánom Jiskrom z Brandýsa, českým vojvodcom, ktorý pre maloletého kráľa Ladislava držal stredné a východné Slovensko a nový hrad používal ako jedno zo svojich sídiel. Boje medzi jeho vojskom a vojskom Jána Huňadyho rozhodli o osude starého hradu na kopci: v roku 1451 počas nich zhorel a už ho nikto neobnovil. Tak sa z kráľovského sídla stal Pustý hrad — a preto má Zvolen dnes dva hrady, jeden zariadený a jeden ako zrúcaninu medzi stromami.
