Peace brought ordinary prosperity back. Zvolen won the right to annual fairs and the staple right — the rule that merchants passing through had to unpack and offer their goods for sale here first — and on the back of that the guilds and the crafts grew again. What the town lost in the same century was its rank: the administration of Zvolen county drifted away to Banská Bystrica, and in 1785 Joseph II abolished the counties altogether for a time. Sources disagree about exactly when the county seat moved, but the direction is not in doubt. Zvolen stayed the natural centre of its region without holding the office that said so.Mier priniesol späť obyčajnú prosperitu.
