In the eleventh century the fortified hill became the centre of the Zvolen comitatus — a royal district so large that it covered much of central Slovakia, and it was governed from up there. The town's name first appears in writing in charters from the reign of Béla II in 1135, in the Latin form Zolium; that is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived. In 1222 a charter names Detrik as the administrator of the royal estates here, the earliest surviving mention of the county itself. By then a three-nave Romanesque basilica of St Nicholas already stood down on the flat — its foundations are marked out today on the castle courtyard.V 11. storočí sa opevnený vrch stal centrom zvolenského komitátu — kráľovského obvodu takého veľkého, že pokrýval veľkú časť stredného Slovenska, a spravoval sa práve odtiaľ. Meno mesta sa po prvý raz objavuje v listinách z čias Bela II. v roku 1135 v latinskom tvare Zolium; to je však údaj o dokumente, nie o tom, kedy sem ľudia prišli. V roku 1222 spomína listina Detrika ako správcu kráľovských majetkov, čo je najstaršia zachovaná zmienka o samotnej stolici. Dole na rovine vtedy už stála trojloďová románska bazilika svätého Mikuláša — jej základy sú dnes vyznačené na nádvorí zámku.
