Slovakia became an independent state on 1 January 1993, and the language agreed in this valley is its state language — the language of its parliament, its schools, its newspapers and its pop songs, written by about five and a half million people. The line from a July afternoon in a village parsonage to that is unusually short: six or seven generations. Hlboké is meanwhile still a small working village in a deep valley, with lanes climbing to the kopanice and long views from the tops. Čiara od jedného júlového popoludnia na dedinskej fare k tomuto je nezvyčajne krátka: šesť či sedem generácií. Hlboké sú pritom stále malá pracovná dedina v hlbokej doline, s cestičkami stúpajúcimi na kopanice a s ďalekými výhľadmi z vrchov. Obe veci platia naraz — a práve to je na tom zaujímavé.
