HlbokéHlboké

The Reformation reached this corner of the kingdom fast, and by the later sixteenth century most of the towns and much of the nobility of the region were Lutheran; Hlboké became a Lutheran village and has been one ever since. That is not a footnote. It decided who the village schoolmaster was, and what language people read in — Lutherans here wrote in Czech, the language of their Bible — and, three centuries later, who its pastor would be. In 1610 the synod of Žilina gave the Lutherans of this country a church organisation of their own, with bishops of their own. A village church is a small building that decides a great deal.
