In 1781 Emperor Joseph II issued the Patent of Toleration, which allowed Lutherans and Calvinists to build churches again — but under conditions: no tower, no bells, and no door onto the street. Hlboké built its church in 1787, one of hundreds of these tolerance churches that went up across the country in the years after the patent, and the rules can still be read in how plain they are. The tower belongs to later work: the church was renovated in 1887 and the tower raised, a hundred years after the building went up, when a Lutheran congregation could build as it liked.
