HlbokéHlboké

The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 and held central Slovakia for two months, until Banská Bystrica fell on 27 October; the west of the country never came under insurgent control, and from the autumn German troops occupied it. The front reached this corner in the first days of April 1945, after Bratislava fell on 4 April and the Soviet advance moved north-west up Záhorie; Senica, the district town about fifteen kilometres away, was taken on 7 April. Fighting in hill country like this is a matter of villages and ridges rather than of front lines drawn on a map.
