History of Trenčín CastleDejiny — Trenčiansky hrad

Every big Slovak castle guards something, and Trenčín guards a gate: the point where the Váh valley narrows between the White Carpathians and the Strážovské hills, so that anyone travelling between the Danube plain and the mountains has to pass under this rock. Roman soldiers wintered at its foot and cut their news into the cliff, a Great Moravian church stood on the summit, an oligarch ruled most of western Slovakia from it without asking the king — and a single fire in 1790 turned the whole complex into a shell that is still being put back together.Každý veľký slovenský hrad niečo stráži a Trenčín stráži bránu: miesto, kde sa údolie Váhu zužuje medzi Bielymi Karpatmi a Strážovskými vrchmi, takže každý, kto ide z podunajskej nížiny do hôr, musí prejsť popod toto bralo. Na jeho päte prezimovali rímski vojaci a svoju správu vytesali do skaly, na temene stál veľkomoravský kostol, z hradu vládol oligarcha väčšine dnešného západného Slovenska a kráľa sa nepýtal — a jediný požiar roku 1790 spravil z celého komplexu vyhorenú škrupinu, ktorú skladajú dokopy dodnes.

  1. AD 179rok 179 Laugaricio: 855 soldiers and a message cut into the rockLaugaricio: 855 vojakov a odkaz vytesaný do skaly

In the winter of AD 179 a Roman detachment was quartered at the foot of this rock, at a place the Romans called Laugaricio. The empire's frontier ran along the Danube, a good way to the south, so these men were camped well beyond the edge of Rome, in the middle of the long wars the emperor Marcus Aurelius fought against the Germanic Quadi. Before they left, they had an inscription cut into a smoothed panel of the cliff — “victoriae Augustorum”, to the victory of the emperors — recording that 855 soldiers of the Second Legion had been stationed at Laugaricio under their commander Maximianus. It is the northernmost Roman inscription anywhere beyond the Danube frontier, and the oldest written naming of a place in Slovakia that still survives in the exact spot it names. The panel is still down there, at the foot of the castle rock.V zime roku 179 táboril na päte tejto skaly oddiel rímskeho vojska na mieste, ktoré Rimania volali Laugaricio.

  2. 9th century9. storočie A church on the summitKostol na temene skaly

Long after the Romans went home, Slavs settled the valley, and in the ninth century — the century of Great Moravia — a stone church stood on top of this rock. Archaeologists found its footings under the upper castle: a rotunda, a small round church, with four apses set around it like the petals of a flower. It is one of the oldest Christian buildings known in Slovakia, and it tells us the rock was already a place of some importance, with a lord and a congregation, three centuries before any surviving document names it. Exactly how old it is remains an argument: some specialists date the rotunda to the Great Moravian ninth century, others to the Romanesque building of the eleventh or twelfth, and you will find both dates in print. — a v knihách nájdete obidva údaje.

  3. 11th–12th century11. – 12. storočie The kingdom's north-western gateSeverozápadná brána kráľovstva

By the eleventh century a stone residential tower stood on the summit — a lord's house that was also a strongpoint — and the rock had become one of the border castles of the young Kingdom of Hungary, watching the roads towards Bohemia and Moravia. A market settlement grew below it; it is mentioned in writing in 1111 and again in 1113, and the castle itself appears in documents from 1193, spelled “de Trenchin”. Remember that those are facts about documents, not about when people arrived — both the settlement and the fort are older than the parchment that first names them. Trenčín became the seat of a county, a župa: the kingdom's basic unit of local government, run for the king by an official called a župan who collected his dues and led the county's men to war. For the next seven centuries, whoever held this rock ran the whole valley.V 11. storočí už stála na temene kamenná obytná veža — panské obydlie, ktoré bolo zároveň pevnôstkou — a skala sa stala jedným z pohraničných hradov mladého Uhorského kráľovstva; strážila cesty smerom do Čiech a na Moravu.

  4. 1241 and the decades afterrok 1241 a desaťročia po ňom 1241, and why Trenčín is the exceptionRok 1241 a prečo je Trenčín výnimkou

In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal host at the river Slaná and rode across the kingdom, burning villages and open towns. It is the year Slovak history turns on — but not in the way people usually assume. Most of the stone castles you can visit in Slovakia today were built because of that year rather than before it: King Béla IV came out of hiding convinced that only stone on high rock would hold, and spent the rest of his reign handing out permissions to build. Trenčín is one of the exceptions, because its tower was already standing, which is why it belongs to the story as a strongpoint and not as a building site. What exactly happened under this rock in 1241 is not recorded in the detail we would like; what is certain is that the castle-building wave which followed filled the whole Váh valley with the neighbours Trenčín still looks out at.Na jar 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko uhorskú kráľovskú armádu pri rieke Slanej a prehnalo sa krajinou; pálilo dediny aj neopevnené mestá.

  5. 1296–13211296 – 1321 Matúš Čák, who ruled without a crownMatúš Čák, ktorý vládol bez koruny

From 1296 Trenčín was the centre of the domain of Matúš Čák, and from this rock he did what no subject is supposed to do: he governed. At the height of his power, in 1311–1312, he controlled fourteen counties and owned more than fifty castle estates — most of what is now western and central Slovakia — appointed his own officials, and treated the king's orders as a suggestion. In 1310 he was made one of the kingdom's three palatines, the king's chief deputies, with authority over Upper Hungary; then he fell out with King Charles Robert, who was trying to put the kingdom back together. When the decisive battle came at Rozhanovce on 15 June 1312, Čák's troops arrived too late to take part; afterwards he shut himself inside his own country and stayed there until he died a natural death on 18 March 1321. His lordship did not outlive him for long — the king took the castles back, Trenčín among them.

  6. 1335, and the later 14th centuryrok 1335 a druhá polovica 14. storočia 1335: three kingdoms settle a quarrel hereRok 1335: tri kráľovstvá tu urovnajú spor

With Čák gone the castle returned to the crown — and in 1335 it mattered enough to host a piece of European diplomacy. Envoys of the kings of Bohemia, Poland and Hungary met at Trenčín and agreed the terms that ended a long quarrel: the Bohemian king gave up his claim to the Polish crown for a payment, and Poland gave up its claim to Silesia. The bargain was confirmed later the same year at the famous congress of the three kings at Visegrád, and it shaped the map of central Europe for generations. In the decades that followed King Louis I, called the Great, built a new palace in the upper castle — the first of the three great residential wings that ring the courtyard, and still called Louis's Palace today.

  7. first third of the 15th century — c. 1490sprvá tretina 15. storočia — 90. roky 15. storočia A queen's palace, then a new familyKráľovnin palác a potom nový rod

In the first third of the fifteenth century King Sigismund of Luxembourg gave Trenčín to his wife, Queen Barbara of Celje, as part of her provision — the estates a queen lived on. She built the second palace and a chapel, and her wing is still Barbara's Palace. These were the decades of the Hussite wars in neighbouring Bohemia and of the Czech captains who took over much of Upper Hungary, so the Váh valley was no quiet backwater, though no source names an attack on this particular castle. At the end of the century the castle and the town passed to the Zápoľský family, one of the richest houses in the kingdom, who rebuilt on a grand scale and added the third of the palaces.V prvej tretine 15. storočia dal kráľ Žigmund Luxemburský Trenčín svojej manželke, kráľovnej Barbore Celjskej, ako súčasť venného majetku — panstiev, z ktorých kráľovná žila.

  8. 1526–15601526 – 1560 Two kings, and the castle changes sidesDvaja králi a hrad, ktorý mení stranu

On 29 August 1526 the Hungarian army was destroyed by the Ottomans at Mohács and the king drowned during the retreat. The kingdom then elected two kings at once: Ferdinand of Habsburg, and Ján Zápoľský — the son of the family that owned Trenčín. Their civil war reached this rock quickly: in 1527 Ferdinand's general Katzianer brought an army up the Váh and took the castle from its Zápoľský garrison, and Trenčín stayed Habsburg from then on. With the Ottoman frontier now running across southern Slovakia, the medieval walls were no longer enough, and between roughly 1540 and 1560 Italian-trained engineers rebuilt Trenčín for artillery — lower and thicker bastions, and the Renaissance parapets you can still pick out on the skyline.29. augusta 1526 rozdrvili Osmani uhorské vojsko pri Moháči a kráľ sa na ústupe utopil. Krajina si vzápätí zvolila dvoch kráľov naraz: Ferdinanda Habsburského a Jána Zápoľského — syna rodu, ktorému patril Trenčín. Ich občianska vojna doľahla na bralo rýchlo: roku 1527 pritiahol Ferdinandov generál Katzianer s vojskom hore Považím a hrad zápoľskovskej posádke odobral; Trenčín odvtedy zostal habsburský. Osmanská hranica už viedla naprieč južným Slovenskom a stredoveké hradby prestali stačiť: približne medzi rokmi 1540 a 1560 prestavali taliansky školení inžinieri Trenčín na delostreleckú pevnosť — nižšie a hrubšie bašty a renesančné atiky, ktoré na siluete rozoznáte dodnes.

  9. c. 1550–1570okolo 1550 – 1570 The Well of Love: what is true and what is notStudňa lásky: čo je pravda a čo nie

A castle on a rock has one permanent weakness: water. Some time around the middle of the sixteenth century the garrison began driving a shaft down through the limestone of the lower courtyard, and reached water roughly eighty metres down. How long it took is disputed — the legend and many guides say forty years, while the castle's own dating puts the work between about 1557 and 1570. That much is history. The story told at the wellhead is not: it says a Turkish nobleman called Omar came to ransom Fatima, whom the lord of the castle was holding, and was told he could have her if he brought the castle water; that he and his men cut for years, and when the water finally came he carried the first cup up and said, “you have water, but you still have no heart.” No document names Omar or Fatima. What can be shown is that the diggers were the castle's own soldiers — and that the tale grew up around a real and genuinely remarkable hole in the rock, which is how most good legends work.

  10. 1600–17081600 – 1708 The uprisings, and the battle fought under the castlePovstania a bitka pod hradom

In 1600 the castle and its estate came to the Ilešházi family (Illésházy in Hungarian), who held it for more than two centuries and became hereditary župans of Trenčín county — the office passed from father to son instead of being granted by the king each time. Their two centuries were the age of the anti-Habsburg uprisings, when Hungarian nobles rose against Vienna over taxes, soldiers and religion. The last and largest of them, led by Francis II Rákóczi, was decided in this valley: Trenčín castle was held for the emperor, Rákóczi's kuruc soldiers — that was the name for the insurgents — laid siege to it, and on 3 August 1708 the imperial general Heister attacked in the fields between Trenčianska Turná, Soblahov and Mníchova Lehota. Rákóczi's horse fell as he jumped a ditch and he was knocked unconscious; the rumour that he was dead ran through his own army, which broke in about three hours and left some three thousand dead and all twelve of its guns on the field. Within months the uprising had lost western Slovakia, and it never recovered. Posledné a najväčšie z nich, povstanie Františka II.

  11. 18th century — 179018. storočie — rok 1790 The fire of 1790Požiar roku 1790

Through the eighteenth century the castle slowly stopped being needed. The Ottoman frontier had moved away, the uprisings were over, and its owners preferred comfortable houses down in the valley to a windy rock; the complex was kept up, but it was closer to a storehouse than a fortress. Then, in 1790, fire broke out in the town below, climbed the rock and took the castle with it. Roofs, ceilings and floors burned, and what was left was masonry standing open to the sky. Nobody rebuilt it — and the reason a visitor today walks through restored halls rather than original ones is that single fire.V priebehu 18. storočia hrad pomaly prestával byť potrebný.

  12. 1822–1838, and the middle of the 19th century1822 – 1838 a polovica 19. storočia A family ends, and Matúš Čák becomes a Slovak heroRod sa končí a z Matúša Čáka je slovenský hrdina

The Ilešházi line ran out with Štefan Ilešházi (1762–1838), the last man of the family, who resigned the county office in 1822 in protest at Habsburg absolutism and then sold off most of his property to pay his debts before dying at Baden near Vienna. The burnt castle above Trenčín changed hands and stayed a ruin, and around the middle of the nineteenth century the first attempts were made simply to stop it collapsing any further. Meanwhile the ruin began a second life in people's heads. This was the era of the Slovak national awakening, when writers went looking for a usable past — and they found Matúš Čák, the man who had ruled from this rock without any king's permission, and made him “the Lord of the Váh and the Tatras”. That title is a nineteenth-century invention, not a medieval one, and Slovaks have used it ever since. Bolo to obdobie slovenského národného obrodenia, keď spisovatelia hľadali použiteľnú minulosť — a našli Matúša Čáka, muža, ktorý z tohto brala vládol bez kráľovho dovolenia, a spravili z neho „pána Váhu a Tatier“. Ten titul je výmyslom 19. storočia, nie stredoveku — a Slováci ho používajú dodnes.

  14. from the late 1950sod konca 50. rokov Putting the shell back togetherSkladať vyhorenú škrupinu dokopy

After 1948 the castle belonged to the state, and from the late 1950s a long, patient restoration began: walls consolidated, the fortifications repaired, and then the burnt palaces re-roofed and fitted out one wing at a time. The Trenčín Museum moved its collections in — armour and weapons, period rooms, the archaeology of the rotunda under the upper castle, and the portrait gallery of the Ilešházi family who had owned the place for two hundred years. That is why Trenčín is not a bare ruin like most of its neighbours along the Váh. It is a ruin that was caught in time, and is still being finished.

  15. 1993 — today1993 — dnes A castle in an independent SlovakiaHrad v samostatnom Slovensku

Since 1 January 1993 the castle has stood in an independent Slovak Republic, and it is looked after by the Trenčín self-governing region through its museum. Restoration still goes on wing by wing, which is why a building or a guided circuit can be closed on the day you visit — a working site, not a finished exhibit. In December 2021 Trenčín was chosen as a European Capital of Culture for 2026, sharing the year with Oulu in Finland. So the rock that Roman soldiers wrote about in 179, that Matúš Čák ruled from, and that a fire emptied in 1790, spends this year with a whole city's cultural programme spread out beneath it.Od 1. januára 1993 stojí hrad v samostatnej Slovenskej republike a stará sa oň cez svoje múzeum Trenčiansky samosprávny kraj.
