One of the largest castle complexes in Slovakia stands on a limestone
crag directly over the town of Trenčín, where the Váh valley narrows to a gate. This was the
seat of Matúš Čák, the magnate remembered as the Lord of the Váh and the Tatras — and
the rock beneath it carries the oldest written record of a place in Slovakia that still stands in the
