The climb starts in the middle of town. From the long main square you pass through a covered stair and a town gate, and then the lane turns to cobble and begins to switch back across the face of the rock. The castle does not appear all at once — it reveals itself gate by gate, each one narrower and older-feeling than the last, until you come out into the lower courtyard with the whole valley suddenly open behind you.Výstup sa začína priamo v centre mesta. Z dlhého hlavného námestia prejdete krytým schodiskom a mestskou bránou a potom sa ulička zmení na dlažbu a začne sa serpentínovito vinúť po skalnej stene. Hrad sa neukáže naraz — odhaľuje sa brána za bránou, každá užšia a staršia než tá predošlá, až vyjdete na dolné nádvorie a za chrbtom sa vám zrazu otvorí celé údolie.
The upper castle is the old heart. Here stands the great keep known as the Matúš Tower, square and unadorned, older than the man it is named for and still the thing you see first from the motorway. Beside it the three residential palaces enclose the courtyard: their restored halls now hold the exhibitions of the regional museum — arms, furniture, portraits of the families who owned the rock. Nearby stand the remains of a small Romanesque rotunda, one of the oldest structures on the site.Horný hrad je starým jadrom. Stojí tu mohutný donjon známy ako Matúšova veža — hranatá, bez ozdôb, staršia než muž, po ktorom ju pomenovali, a stále to prvé, čo z diaľnice uvidíte. Vedľa nej uzatvárajú nádvorie tri obytné paláce: ich obnovené sály dnes ukrývajú expozície krajského múzea — zbrane, nábytok, portréty rodov, ktoré skalu vlastnili. Neďaleko stoja zvyšky malej románskej rotundy, jednej z najstarších stavieb na hrade.
Climb the tower and the geography explains itself: the Váh coming down out of the north, the town packed into the bend below, the White Carpathians on one side and the Strážovské hills on the other, and the narrow gap between them that every army, merchant and railway engineer has had to use. Allow time simply to stand there.Vystúpte na vežu a geografia sa vysvetlí sama: Váh prichádzajúci zo severu, mesto vtesnané do zákruty pod vami, na jednej strane Biele Karpaty a na druhej Strážovské vrchy — a medzi nimi úzka medzera, ktorou musela prejsť každá armáda, každý kupec i každý železničný inžinier. Nechajte si čas jednoducho tam stáť.
