In the winter of AD 179 a Roman detachment was quartered at the foot of this rock, at a place the Romans called Laugaricio. The empire's frontier ran along the Danube, a good way to the south, so these men were camped well beyond the edge of Rome, in the middle of the long wars the emperor Marcus Aurelius fought against the Germanic Quadi. Before they left, they had an inscription cut into a smoothed panel of the cliff — “victoriae Augustorum”, to the victory of the emperors — recording that 855 soldiers of the Second Legion had been stationed at Laugaricio under their commander Maximianus. It is the northernmost Roman inscription anywhere beyond the Danube frontier, and the oldest written naming of a place in Slovakia that still survives in the exact spot it names. Hranica ríše viedla po Dunaji, poriadny kus na juh, takže títo muži prezimovali hlboko za okrajom impéria, uprostred dlhých vojen, ktoré cisár Marcus Aurelius viedol proti germánskym Kvádom. Než odtiahli, dali do uhladenej plochy brala vytesať nápis — „victoriae Augustorum“, na víťazstvo cisárov — a v ňom, že v Laugariciu sídlilo 855 vojakov druhej légie pod velením Maximiána. Je to najsevernejší rímsky nápis kdekoľvek za dunajskou hranicou a najstaršie písomné pomenovanie miesta na Slovensku, ktoré sa zachovalo presne tam, kde ho vytesali. Doska je stále dole, na päte hradnej skaly.
