In the first third of the fifteenth century King Sigismund of Luxembourg gave Trenčín to his wife, Queen Barbara of Celje, as part of her provision — the estates a queen lived on. She built the second palace and a chapel, and her wing is still Barbara's Palace. These were the decades of the Hussite wars in neighbouring Bohemia and of the Czech captains who took over much of Upper Hungary, so the Váh valley was no quiet backwater, though no source names an attack on this particular castle. At the end of the century the castle and the town passed to the Zápoľský family, one of the richest houses in the kingdom, who rebuilt on a grand scale and added the third of the palaces.V prvej tretine 15. storočia dal kráľ Žigmund Luxemburský Trenčín svojej manželke, kráľovnej Barbore Celjskej, ako súčasť venného majetku — panstiev, z ktorých kráľovná žila. Postavila druhý palác a kaplnku a jej krídlo je dodnes Barborin palác. Boli to desaťročia husitských vojen v susedných Čechách a českých kapitánov, ktorí ovládli veľkú časť Horného Uhorska, takže Považie nebolo pokojným zákutím — hoci útok práve na tento hrad nijaký prameň nespomína. Na konci storočia prešiel hrad aj mesto na Zápoľskovcov, jeden z najbohatších rodov kráľovstva; prestavali ho vo veľkom a pribudol tretí z palácov.
